Throwback Tuesdays- Jay Jay Okocha

Augustine Azuka “Jay-Jay” Okocha (born 14 August 1973 apparently lol) is a Nigerian former footballer who played as a midfielder. He is known for his stepovers, brilliant skill, technique, and being ‘so good that they named him twice’ (a line immortalised in a terrace chant while Okocha played for Bolton Wanderers). He is a dual Nigerian-Turkish citizen, having acquired Turkish citizenship as “Muhammet Yavuz” while playing for Süper Lig team Fenerbahçe.

He was and still is the best Midfielder to have ever come out on Nigeria. He brought quality to a football pitch and I am sure Bolton fans will never forget that freekick against Boro to keep them up, or the Goal for Nigeria out of nowhere to bring them level in the 2000 african Nations Cup final against Cameroun (they lost but  still)

Okocha never won the African Player of Year award, becoming arguably the best player never to win the award despite coming second twice in 1998 and 2004. He did however win the inaugural BBC African Footballer of the Year and the successive one, becoming the only player to retain the award and win it more than once. In 2004 he was listed in football legend Pelé’s FIFA 100 (a list of the greatest 125 living players of all time). In 2007 he was voted number 12 on the greatest African footballers of the past 50 years list, on a poll conducted by CAF to coincide with their 50th anniversary.

He is out 10maestro throwback for today. Here is a Video of him in action. Enjoy!

I cannot even make up Words to sum up how I feel about this! Ferguson is ManUnited. He has Inspired even past the world of football.

Nigeria Vs Burkina Faso AFCON 2013 final

It’s only right that the first team that I watched as a child is the first team I get to write about in my Blog today. Yesterday The super eagles of Nigeria defied all the odds to lift the AFCON 2013 trophy. This is a team that was void of all the “STAR” names e.g. Odemwinge( he definitely has to be idiot of  the century for his deadline day antics lol) Obafemi Martins and Taye Taiwo and they still delivered. It’s not just that they won the trophy, it’s the way that they won! They showed something that I have not seen in a Nigerian team since the year 2000 DETERMINATION. these guys were determined when it came down to it. Yes in the first few games of the tournament even I wrote them off because they surrendered the lead in the closing stages of the matches but a friend of mine told me to look closer there is something about this team. The defence surprisingly was solid! the 2 youngsters Oboabona and Omeruo were very good easily the best Defenders in the tournament. Up front we had the BEEFY POWER HOUSE that is EMENIKE!! This guy needs a nick name similar to Daniel Amokachi THE BULL! every player contributed something(except uche he’s a fake guy!) even Mikel stepped up his game from the quarter-final upwards. I have to also mention the guy that has become an instant cult hero in Nigeria and to all Nigerians. The man, The Myth, The legend(already lol) SUNDAY MBEEEZY MBA! aka ELEPHANT SLAYER! This guy plays in the local leagues in Nigeria for Warri Wolves and yet he came up with the key goal to win the trophy. He is not the next Jay Jay or Kanu but with the right club and manager in a better league of course he will be a decent enough player to make the Nigerian team for many years and hopefully win more trophies. He is good with the ball but without it he needs to work a little harder but that means nothing to most people back home as he is the STAR now.  Credit must also Go to The BOSS Stephen Keshi who has become the second manager to win the AFCON as a player and as a coach. Whatever he did to inspire the lads i hope he can continue to do it for a long time. All in all it was a Decent tournament. I noticed the quality of  football has improved in the continent but we still have a long way to go to be close to the Europeans technical abilities or the raw flair of the south americans but this tournament showed we can get there. CONGRATS AGAIN TO THE SUPER EAGLES! its nice to see you FLYING AGAIN!
